Many people view The Healing Place as a safety net for the community that helps those who are struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol. When every other option has been exhausted, The Healing Place is still there to help them back up.

We are very excited to bring that level of compassion to a new program starting up in Wilmington, North Carolina. A partnership between The Healing Place, New Hanover County Government, Onslow County, Brunswick County, and Trillium Health Resources is bringing our social model recovery program model to a community where there are very few abstinence-based options for individuals seeking recovery.

For years, our program model has been recognized nationally for its success, including a distinction of a “Model That Works” by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. We believe that the lifestyles that come along with drug abuse and alcoholism are just as big of a problem as the actual substance abuse. Our program just makes sense as a practical approach to addressing the issues that our clients face in their everyday lives. The Healing Place model helps our clients develop structure, responsibility, and self-esteem while introducing them to a 12-step program of recovery.

The Healing Place of New Hanover County began construction on February 15, 2021 and is projected to open in May 2022. This 200-bed facility will have 100 beds for women and 100 beds for men. That includes 28 beds (14 for women, 14 for men) in a non-medical detox that clients will be able to access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The program will also offer 16 beds (8 for women, 8 for men) in an overnight shelter for the homeless. The rest of the facility will include a motivational track, recovery phase, and peer mentoring program – just like the programs in Louisville and Campbellsville.

The Healing Place of New Hanover County is the latest replication of The Healing Place model, which is also used in 14 Recovery Kentucky facilities across the Commonwealth as well as locations in Richmond, Virginia and Raleigh, North Carolina.

We believe that true recovery is grounded in service work. That the concept of one alcoholic/addict reaching back to help another alcoholic/addict is where recovery starts. It is this dynamic that drives us to want to spread the message of recovery. The opioid epidemic never went away for the people of Wilmington; it’s still going just as strong as it was a few years ago. At The Healing Place, we look forward to being part of the solution for this community in need.
